Track Of The Day: Depeche Mode - The Sinner In Me (Ricardo Villalobos Conclave Remix) (Not On Label)

From what I remember, and it gets hazier and hazier, apparently Depeche Mode didn’t approve of this remix, which is the reason it didn’t get an official release. That’s a great pity, as it’s an absolute classic of it’s type. It’s type being long, drawn out and hypnotic. In short, everything that’s come to be expected of a Villalobos remix. It’s subtlety is such that less is more, even over this characteristically lengthy project. Dave Gahan’s vocal is under the spotlight while the understated tribal backbone undulates like the peaceful breathing of a sleeping hound, (mine actually, who seems to be expertly keeping time next to me as I listen). The track appears to go through three stages of development, at around the half-way mark, when the percussion starts to get a little denser, and then from around 9 minuts in, when some synth washes appear and the kick disappears. It’s an evergreen piece of music that is due a bit of a revival methinks. Like a lot os Villalobos remixes it’s a great tool, while being a stand alone track. Layers beget layers.
