Feed Your Head Guest Mix: Sean Johnston ALFOS 23 The Dark Side Of The Spoon

Track Of The Day: Abstract Thought - Untitled 02 (Clone Aqualung Series)

Rereleased courtesy of Clone towards the end of last year on pale pink vinyl no less, this EP from Abstract Thought, yet another pseudonym for Gerald Donald, first saw the light of day in 2019, in spite of being recorded, and then shelved, in 2003 (I think). This is the second of three untitled compositions, each of which are excellent in their own unique way. ‘Untitled 02’ is a concise piece of mysterious sound design that encapsulates Donald’s unique take on electro, echoes Drexciya and also UR, the high end synth stabs having already been heard on such masterpieces as ‘Code Breaker’. ‘The Illuminator’ is another classic UR track that is evoked, although more in mood than anything else. This is very good company to be in though, and a measure of this compositions depth and sonic mapping. As Clone say themselves: “Music beamed through Dimensional Waves by Abstract Thought. Three unnamed Abstract Thoughts taken from the original project tapes from 2003, recorded around the same time as the well known full length album release. Sonic expressions that will need your own interpretation to lead to a reality-oriented conclusion.” No more need be said, except to be thankful for the fact that music like this exists, and that it continues to inspire.

Track Of The Day: Yellow Sox - Flim Flam (Nuphonic)

So we’re approaching the end of the year and, after just over a week’s holiday, a comfortable sense of disorientation and fugue has set in. However, although I’m waking up later and later each day, the annoying thing is that everything will be “back to normal” in three or four days time. It’s always the case I suppose, like going over to France in holiday, speaking French for the first time in a while, finally improving enough to stop tripping over my words too much only to have to return home the next day. Why these analogies? Only to highlight the inexorable passing of time, the patterns within it, and the parallels with the music we listen to. The soundtracks to our daily lives, and so on. Track of the day today is a suitably transient piece of ephemeral bliss; which describes them all to a certain extent. ‘Flim Flam’ by Yellow Sox, aka Diesel, was the best thing to come out on Nuphonic, a label that appeared in the late nineties and typified, for me, at least, a very London-centric house sound. Having said that, it was instrumental in opening a lot of people’s ears to the sound of The Loft and David Mancuso, through two seminal compilations. A great, tkimeless track and something that takes me back to the days of the Gold Bar residency with Monsieur Kevin Harding. If you read this Kev, get in touch.

Track Of The Day: Mutabaruka - De System (Alligator)

So I woke up this morning at about 6:45, stuck the radio on low, settled back onto my pillow and listened to it. And whoever was being interviewed started talking about “the system”, and started off this earworm. And then I realised that I’d been priming this particular track for a while in my head. I remember buying ‘Check It’ when it came out and it completely blew my mind; the words are incredible, as is the music. In the same way that Linton Kwesi Johnson used Dennis Bovell’s dub band to devastating effect, the versatile stylings of the many musicians used on this album lift and enhance the utterings. ‘De System’ is less than three minutes long, but packs a considerable punch. Having said that, nothing much has changed to alter its sentiments in the forty years since it was released.

Track Of The Day: AIR - Soldissimo (Super Sale) (EDC Remix) (Different)

Writing is one way to shake oneself out of the food-induced torpor that has been a refuge since Christmas day. Well, that and running which, while enjoyable and fulfilling, does knacker one out for the rest of the day. Maybe not a good idea to play this piece of blissful excellence then. Springing from the loins of the mid-nineties trip hop hinterland, it’s probably fair to surmise that although many associate the sound of filter disco with a lot of what came out of Paris around thirty years ago, the fact that there was a very vibrant funk and downtempo scene running parallel at the same time is largely forgotten. Etienne de Crecy straddled both scenes and this, his remix of Air’s ‘Soldissimo’ on his seminal ‘Super Discount’ series of 10” singles, is a touchstone of those times. Whether stuff like this came about of its own volition, or as a reaction to the burgeoning popularity of French rap, mixed with the emergence of Mo’ Wax, is debatable. What is certain though is that neither de Crecy or Air made music that wasn’t merely ephemeral. In spite of this, ‘Soldissimo (EDC Remix)’ has the most stoned vibe outside of the late 1960s California that undoubtably inspired it that it’s possible to have. Sounding like a lost loop from Love’s ‘Forever Changes’, or an outtake from ‘Stairway To Heaven’,  it’s an iridescent, hallucinogenic piece that feels both medieval and modern simultaneously; and, even though its composition is uncomplicated, it has a sophisticated knack to play with space, reaching far into the abyss of the subconscious.

Track Of The Day: Roy Budd - Get Carter - Main Theme (Carter Takes a Train) (Odeon)

We’ve reached that point in the year when, if you’re lucky enough to be able to take a few days off, everything blends together and you lose track of time. And so this popped into my head this morning. One of the most memorable pieces of music from, arguably, the best British gangster film (there are a few contenders). This composition exudes both cool and claustrophobia, putting into concise perspective what it might be like to lead such a fugitive existence which is both simultaneously attractive and deadly. Roy Budd, the composer, was a self-taught child prodigy and ‘Get Carter’ became his best-known piece of work. The film's budget reputedly allowed only £450 for the score, but he overcame this restriction by using only three musicians, including himself playing electric piano and harpsichord simultaneously. In 1981 The Human League covered the film's theme on their album 'Dare’.”

Track Of The Day: Anomaly - Serenitatis (Soul People Music)

Deep as you like, they Around 8 or 9 years ago, Fred P brought a trio of singles under the ‘Anomaly’ guise which joined the dots between house, dub, techno and the firmament. Deep as you like, they all generally fall into the minimal tech category, but are so robust and versatile that they offer that little bit more. I suppose that’s what we’ve come to expect from the deep house royalty that is Fred P.

Track Of The Day: Halo Varga - Dark Clouds (Bluem)

Halo Varga kicks off this Siesta Music sub label in much the same way as he graced its parent. Driving, dirty, dubby, percussive tribal house music, underpinned by a sleepy bass and an effects-laden sonic canopy. There’s a real rawness to this track, and all of the obvious drug-fuelled flourishes that it contains make it a perfect tune for the afterhours. However, any time is the right time when you’re twatted. Lovely, messy house music for the mind, body and soul.

Track Of The Day: Swayzak - Bueno (Swayzak Recordings)

During 1997 three singles, which still remain a little enigmatic to this day, were released that announced Swayzac to the world. And although a cursory look at Discogs reveals that the first couple go for better money, it’s ‘Bueno’ of the third release, which is the pick of all of the compositions across the three. Weighing in at a hefty 15 minutes long, it is a well-paced, subtle track which has the stamina to go on for a lot longer. Atmospheric, cinematic and very danceable, it goes without saying that it’s also brilliant in the mix. Certainly a great bridging track to bring a set out of the dub techno darkness and into the more momentous light.

Track Of The Day: Bullitt | Soundtrack Suite (Warner Bros)

A great example of a piece of art which has been summarised. And although that’s not to say that someone else might not do it differently, what we have here is one interpretation of the musical meanderings that accompany one of the stand out films of the late 60s, one of many iconic works by the great Lalo Schifrin. To listen to this collection of pieces stitched together in this way is to be dropped into a world full of glamour, excitement and nostalgia; which is a pity because we’ll never see a time like it again. It reeks of cool and transcends cliché, because music like this so effortlessly soundtracked an autonomous layer of society that taught us all how to look good without even trying, because that was it back then. Brilliant arrangements and an implicit ambience of controlled excess mark this soundtrack out as a panoramic masterpiece.

Track Of The Day: Ark - Wagon (Krikor Remix) (Art Brut)

Ark and Krikor clash on this piece of funky minimalism which is a perennial ear worm. The the strong groove is brought in by Krikor (I’m guessing) to reinforce Ark’s sample heavy approach. So the beats are Krikor’s and the surviving insanity are traces of Ark. Or something like that. What isn’t in doubt is the spark flying funk generated from this collaboration.

Track Of The Day: Giorgio Moroder - Chase (Casablanca Records)

An epic synth symphony from the mind of Giorgio Moroder that has one of the most memorable melodies ever committed to music. As most will know, it comes from ‘Midnight Express’, but play this to someone who doesn’t and there’s a fair chance they’ll have no idea that it’s 45 years old. Along with ‘I Fell Love’, the sound of the future at the tail end of the 70s. Great memories of being at a rave in Paris, Porte de Versailles, and Juan Atkins playing this, the crowd in uproar and everyone eating fresh strawberries which, at the time, tasted like the food of the Gods. Even better when you can walk home afterwards. It was at the bottom of my road.

Track Of The Day: Jay Tripwire - Starseed (Musex Industries)

I remember a mix that Jay Tripwire put up earlier this year for Electronic Groove, and he described the music therein, and his own output, as “music for people who take drugs”. Or something like that. Of course this is the foundation of much of what passes for what we like to generically refer to as “house”, whether we like it or not.. And this piece of dubbed out, upfront, stripped down house music is very much in that vein. Riding the bpms to the higher end of the house scale, there is an element of friction that reins the track in somewhat, adding density and body where there is space and air. It’s a groovy piece of work that I can imagine mixing out of the rear end of a dynamic piece of dub techno. A track that keeps the home fires burning, supporting more fragile compositions with its strong bone structure.

Track Of The Day: Bassheads - Is There Anybody Out There (Deconstruction)

Bassheads were two lads from my neck of the woods, The Wirral, coming from Birkenhead and Neston (a posh bit), respectively. This, like so many others at the time, was a massive rave monster on Decontruction. Cleverly contstructed from a variety of different samples, one of the most noticeable being the ‘Once In A Lifetime’ underlay), this is a great piece of pop music that crossed all over the place and delivered a great piece of acid into bedrooms and living rooms everywhere. The hip house element can bring the cheese, so nowadays I reckon an instrumental version would work better (on the discerning dance floor of course.) There are some interesting comments on the Discogs release page that shed some more light on the sampling, and how the track came to be released, which are worth reading. Due a revival I think, but as an edit.

Track Of The Day: Benjamin Zephaniah - Rasta (Upright Records)

The title track from Benjamin Zephaniah’s first album; ‘Rasta’ is one that I’m posting because I’ve seen too many other posts of ‘Dis Policeman Keeps Kicking Me To Death’. That’s not to say it’s not a great track. It is. IT just wasn’t my first choice. Nevertheless, it’s brilliant. Zephaniah was an absolute giant and his recent death, coming completely out of the blue, was a shock. He leaves an excellent legacy though. When this record came out myself and a circle of friends were listening to a lot of reggae. The late seventies, early eighties were like that for me. And the poets: Linton Kwesi Johnson, Michael Smith, Mutabaruka and Oku Onuora stood out for their consciousness, the strength of their massage and the great backing music they used. I suppose what set Benjamin Zephaniah apart more than anything was his infectious sense of humour and his levity. The world is a much poorer place without him.

Track Of The Day: Riccardo - Chaotic Paradox (Imprints)

Imprints was a label which flourished around six or seven years ago. I bought a few bits, and this is one of them. One track from a double vinyl release ‘Let’s Move To The Future Together’, ‘Chaotic Paradox’ is a very vibrant track. Break beats are employed on various levels in order to produce a homogenising, harmonising effect. Once you’ve got used to the track stretching out, and the beats coming across more smoothly than they might normally, the synth washes come in and stabilise the piece some more. The search for normality is one deep within the remit of the composition, as there is so much going on and some control is necessary in order to eponymously represent the artistic angle. And, although I realise that this is some cosmic waffle, I believe it describes the tune perfectly. Ha!

Track Of The Day: Silent Phase - Meditive Fusion (Transmat/R & S)

A track which, true to its name, is one that invites solitary speculation and reflection, while fluctuating along its lateral line, offering plenty of twists and turns along the way. The production on this album is refined throughout, with each tune taking the listener on a unique mini journey. Of Detroit, but quite a unique and under appreciated piece of work. For some reason Stacey Pullen’s profile has remained quite low throughout his career. Maybe it’s because he has never been very prolific. One of the best DJs I’ve ever seen though. A set he played at The Rex shortly after his ‘DJ Kicks’ came out is unforgettable, as was when he played a deep house set at Kenny Hawkes’ and Luke Solomon’s ‘Space’.

Track Of The day: J.S.Zeiter - Skirmish (Re-work) (Pleasure)

A piece of unwavering dub techno inspired brilliance. Even though you think you’ve heard it before, there’s always something else that moves you. In this case it’s the symbiotic unison of razor sharp synth stabs, off beat hand claps and lilting, other worldly synthetic ephemera. J.S. Zeiter came up with this back in the dying embers of the twentieth century, and is still wringing out new sonic directions for those of a primitive, visceral but also introspective persuasion. The wormhole is strong in this one.

Track Of The Day: Tan-Ru – Purple Heart (Trelik)

A track that did the business for me bitd and one that could have it’s time again. A combination of break beats, boffing bass and schematic cymbals, this pressure cooker of a tune is defintely a secret weapon when dropped at the right time. It’s one of those tunes that seems to be simmering forever, and it manages to do this by starting off at a high point, then maintaining its intensity. Coming out on Trelik when it did, I could have bought it expecting something more minimal, instead of the banger that I got. Having said that ‘Toggle’ on the other side, feels like a more stripped down version, while ‘Melons’ is dub reggae. An interesting release no matter what angle you approach it from.

Track Of The Day: Swag - Them Drums (Version Dub) (Version)

I bought most of Swag’s output, and a release such as this typifies their sound for me. Percussion based, bottom heavy and as funky as the machines can muster. Their last original release was (checks Discogs), way back in 2007; with a digital only compilation of sorts, ‘Mis-Shapes 3’, coming out in 2021. Time was when their minimal, chiselled and occasionally jazzy hand was everywhere, playing its part in a fertile period of underground house music which has distinct UK vibes.

Track Of The Day: Beroshima - Hexaline (Hiroshi Watanabe Remix) (Muller Records)

A track which, more than many claiming to do so, defines “swirling electronica”. For most of it’s length the synths just swirl, and phase in and out of a sonic maelstrom. And all that time they are underpinned by rampant drumming and embellished by the merest inflections of keys. The elements themselves are simple, but they take on new life due to the standard of production. At the controls is Hiroshi Watanabe, a producer for whom this type of emotive excursion is par for the course. Ever the one for the grand gesture, he ends up turning this track into a soaring, symphonic Detroit homage, forever pushing against the limits of what is a stylistically saturated genre, and extracting new riches.

Track Of The Day: Reptant - Hydrax (Tomahawk)

From the ‘Night Time Creepin’ release around 4 years or so ago, this piece of electric sleaze reminds me of a more pacey ‘Alpha Omega Strings’ by Anthilia Waters. Reptant, aka Lou Karsh, has emerged to be one of electro’s leading lights in recent times, and with tracks like this, which straddle the gothic acid machine funk middle ground, it’s no wonder why. This is electro with depth, soul and spills over into more than the sum of its parts.

Track Of The Day: Elastic Reality - Cassa De X (Deep Dish Does X) (Tribal)

Well, this one works on so many levels. Coming from a similar direction as ‘The Dream (Sharam’s Deep Dish Dreamscape)’, but much more laid back, it’s no surprise to learn that both tracks are Brian Transeau (BT)/Deep Dish collaborations. Thte track can afford a long, drawn out teasing intro, the genius of which is you just know it’s going to let loose at some point. From then on it’s a combination of batacuda percussion, strategically dropped Rhodes keys and some devilish phasing. And the fact that “ecstasy” can be spoken at random points throughout and not sound in the slightest bit cheesy, but like the most meaningful thing ever says it all. They really don’t make them like this anymore. A track that could be played at any point in the night, in a sweaty warehouse, or a tropical beach party, and conjure up the most positive imagery imaginable has to be one of the greatest of its kind. This is that track.

TrackOf The Day: Space - Space (Part 2) (KLF Communications)

With The KLF ominously moving back into the middle distance over the last few days, what better time to remind myself that I have a cd copy of this album stuck in a cupboard somewhere close, but tantalisingly out of reach. ‘Space’, the work of Jimmy Cauty, was apparently slated to be the fist Orb album, beginning life as a collaboration between Cauty and Alex Patterson. This is one of the longer tracks on it, having said that on the cd the entire collection is presented as one, composite stellar symphony. This particular track evokes the helplessness and isolation that must be encountered in the black hit of space particularly well. The arpeggio perfectly in parallel with the pointless struggle for survival in a vacuum, and the realisation that nothing can be done. Which brings us along nicely to The KLF’s latest caper: building a ‘People’s Pyramid’ in Birkenhead’s Future Yard. It would appear the circle is nearing completion, if, indeed, it is a circle. Definitely a pyramid though.

Track Of The Day: DJ Sneak - Latin Seoul (Large)

From his ‘Blu Belly Bandit EP’, released back in 1996, this is one of many classic tracks that DJ Sneak has released over the years. What makes this stand out, however, is its subtlety and aura. Utilising a sample from ‘Sueno Latino’, which was, in turn, inspired by Manuel Gottsching’s ‘E2-E4’, this is a potent builder that fades in and put of the mix to great effect. Why ‘Seoul’? What, if any, is the Korean connection? No idea. Is DJ Sneak still a “house gangsta”? God knows. This is one of his best though.

Track Of The Day: 214 -- Pattern Rotate (Klakson)

One of my absolute favourite producers right now, in any genre. 214, aka Chris Roman makes stunning, cosmic electro that appeals on many levels. This track is from ‘Exit 32’, a 2018 release on Steffi’s Klason label which skillfully blends acidic and beat tones to create a composition that occupies a level of depth that I am very much in favour of. Mr Roman is a resident of North Bend, a remote settlement in Washington state, USA , famous for being the location for David Lynch’s ‘Twin Peaks’. Clearly operating out of this location has had a positive influence on his output, with ‘Pattern Rotate’ reeking of the beauty that can only be found when the weather is cold and one is left to contemplate amongst the isolation.
