Ionize - Prequel Tapes & dBridge (Midnight Shift)

Title: Ionize

Artist: Prequel Tapes & dBridge

Label: Midnight Shift

Cat Number: MNSX024

Genre: Electronic Confluence

A1: Divisible Cause

A2: Stray Thrills

B1: Pleasure Systems

B2: Mindless

Another interesting release from Midnight Shift who continue to set the controls to the heart of electronic rhythm’s g spot; the four cuts here each offering a different slant on syncopation and implicitly occupying the middle of asythetic audio Venn Diagram. None of these tracks weigh in at more than just over five minutes, which is a pity as they’ve each got legs and off kilter originality. ‘Stray Thrills’ is the heaviest tune here, but it simultaneously manages to feel weightless. ‘Divisible Cause’ is a scatty beat which offers the illusion of disembodiment. ‘Pleasure Systems’ is brittle break beats which crackle and flame, and ‘Mindless’ is an urgent, neurotic, dub – infused parallax. What brings all of these tracks together though, is an array of subtly used effects that distort the trajectory of the individual components and artfully reassembles them before the listener can come to terms with the change.

The House That Jack Built - Jack Butters (tici taci)

Title: The House That Jack Built

Artist: Jack Butters

Label: tici taci

Cat Number: TICI TACI 069

Genre: Monument Valley Musings

1: Still Got The Feeling

2: Chicken Wah Wah

3: Searching For You

4: Full Panic Mode

5: Wild West Show

6: Diddley Bo

7: Stake To The Heart

8: Drowning In Acid

9: The House That Jack Built

Jack Butters starts his album off with the kind of vocal track which feels like it was made for the Marlboro Man to sing. ‘Still Got The Feeling’ is a clarion call to those who can’t be arsed, but should be. ‘Searching For You’ elicits similar panoramas, inasmuch as one feels very much home on the range, and ‘Wild West Show’ just confirms what one has suspected since the start, which is this is music made for minds eye big skies and prairies, albeit with a synthetic twist. The whole record bounces along on its own propulsive coccyx and is compellingly danceable right from the get go. ‘Diddley Bo’ is an obvious homage to the great man, with acid lines framing and embellishing spectral riffs culminating in a hoodoo hoedown. And it’s a combination of these two motifs that permeate the record from start to finish, appropriately culminating on the title track, which thankfully throws some piano from the golden age of rave in to top it all off. On the one hand, visceral and functional, on the other, wrapped up in a longing to be somewhere across the Atlantic rounding up cattle, chewing tobacco, farting around the campfire and having random shoot outs.

Track Of The Day: Formenverwandler - Der Zyklus (Gigolo)

Highlife - DJ Y (Unknown To The Unknown)

Title: Highlife

Artist:  DJ Y

Label:  Dance Trax

Cat Number: DANCETRAX033

Genre: Breakbeat Spread

1: Modern Wank

2: Gutter Funk

3: High Life

DJ Y is Coco Bryce, someone whose nom de plume always puts me in mind of a young American tennis player. And I’m sure he gets it all the time from randoms trying to be out there with their word association. “Modern Wank” indeed . . . and I usually don’t go for such manic fare, but both that and ‘High Life’ do, in spite of their lack of restraint, convey something. Bryce’s melodic approach, on this release at least, is an, emotive, highly strung one that manages to sit of the right side of cheese. ‘Gutter Funk’, however,  is a raw, slightly jarring piece of Relief – inspired trackiness which will appeal to the dancing drones out there, but not to anyone who demands a bit of consonance to carry them along.

SNKRX08 - J-Shadow (Sneaker Social Club)

Title: SNKRX08

Artist:  J-Shadow

Label: Sneaker Social Club

Cat Number: SNKRX08

Genre: Hardcore Tapestry

1: Fade

2: Kugelblitz (The Inescapable Reward)

3: Diffraction

4: Atlantis

5: Particle Horizon

6: Hibernation Lumina Falls

There’s a wonderfully disembodied feel to this release, bookended as it is by a couple of tracks which straddle the hardcore/ambient divide as much as it is possible to so. In view of this, a good sense of progression also. Like the third law of thermodynamics might say, everything gradually descends into chaos, but it’s ordered and logical. ‘Fade’ opens proceedings, gradually giving way along its atmospheric length to abrasion. This builds, with ‘Kugelblitz (The Inescapable Reward)’ having a similar, but fuller-bodied outlook.

‘Diffraction’ and ‘Atlantis’ maintain a momentum which is restrained but still bursting at the seams. ‘Particle Horizon’ is peak obliteration and the storm before the calm of ‘Hibernation Lumina Falls’, which terminates an excellent release wide in scope and ambition.

COD3 QR 010 - V/A (Cod3 QR)

Title: COD3 QR 010

Artist: V/A

Label: Cod3 QR

Cat Number: COD3QR010

Genre: Techno

A1. Artist Code 4C472E – ‘How D'Ya Like Your Beef’

A2. Artist Code 53504D & 414D41 – ‘Poliritmo’

B1. Artist Code 534358 – ‘Internal’

B2. Artist Code 494E46 – ‘Bye Bye’

“Four new tracks by five artists who will remain nameless”, eh? So let’s dive in. ‘How D'Ya Like Your Beef’, “I like it raw” is the answer, intoned across the length of a track whose minimal leanings occasionally become more abrasive. At almost ten minutes in length it probably could have been cut, but whatever. It’s in the mix and can pop up from time to time to add drama. ‘ ‘Poliritmo’ is driving emotivetechno. It’s been done a milli0on times before but if it’s good it’s always welcome and dramatic, and here it’s good. ‘Internal’ is a claustrophobic, intense track which will see steam rise, while ‘Bye Bye’ is perhaps the most interesting composition here. Much more on the house trip, it’s a glistening, melodic trip into a synth driven universe.

ONE049 - V/A (One)

Title: ONE049

Artist: V/A

Label: One

Cat Number: ONE049

Genre: Deep House Variables

1: Cut The Cheese – Yamen EDA

2: Organic Affaire – MARIIIN

3: €±§ - Sam Bangura

4: Silver Cut – Subb-an

5: Hearing Voices (Club Mix) – Ciel & Kilig

6: Ridin Switch – Duowe Picasso

One Records marl almost a half century of releases with another various artist compilation featuring an eclectic range of tunes within the deep house/breakbeat blueprint. And while everything is very well realised, those tracks which make the most immediate impression stand out that little bit more than the rest. So it’s quite difficult because everything is so useful and manages to put its own little twist on whatever it graces. However, ‘Hearing Voices (Club Mix)’ by Ciel & Kilig is the most interesting track here, for me at least. Managing to make me imagine as well as tap my toes. I like the way ‘ Ridin Switch’ by Duowe Picasso soars effortlessly, but it lack a little edge. Sam Bangura’s ‘€±§’ is rhythmically interesting and nicely off beat on occasion. ‘Cut The Cheese’ by Yamen EDA is cosmic house very much in the vein of Janeret, and there’s always space in the mix for something like it. ‘Organic Affaire’ by MARIIIN is beaks backed by prominent keys which, while functional, feels soft, and Subb-an’s ‘Silver Cut’ is a tracky piece of work that, while it works very well indeed, (like everything here), feels a bit too refined. All good though and well worth your shekels.

Pepper EP - Basic Rhythm (Hypercolour)

Title: Pepper EP

Artist:  Basic Rhythm

Label: Hypercolour

Cat Number: HYPE090

Genre: Rhythm Centered Rollers

1: Pepper

2: 3am On The Corner

3: Moonlight Flit

My partner’s first observation on hearing this EP’s title track was to say that she thought it was a heavily laden wheelbarrow going down our back passage. We’re having some work done at the moment you see. I think she over-exaggerated; having said that, as far as fitting into to the “rhythm centred rollers” glove is concerned coming on like a hoodoo ho down, maybe not. It’s not all heavy though. ‘3am On The Corner’ is a rubberoid skank through the wee small hours with a sax. This is risky I think, but minimally applied and reasonable. ‘Moonlight Flit’’ is all about the snare, which is more or less all that is going on here. Then the undulating sub bass makes its presence felt adding to the stripped down, tribal feel of this visceral stomp.

Roentgen - The Hacker Vs Commuter (Cultivated Electronics)

Title: Roentgen

Artist: The Hacker Vs Commuter

Label: Cultivated Electronics

Cat Number: CE039

Genre: Electro

A1: Roentgen Pt. 1

A2: Roentgen Pt. 2

B1: RBMK (MMT-8 Remix)

B2: RBMK

The roentgen or röntgen (/ˈrɜːntɡən/; symbol R) is a legacy unit of measurement for the exposure of X-rays and gamma rays, and is defined as the electric charge freed by such radiation in a specified volume of air divided by the mass of that air.

There’s nothing like a bit of encyclopaedic gravitas to start a review off in a more enlightened way. The reason for this is the Hacker and Commuter’s ‘Chernobyl’ inspired release., with ‘RBMK’ being the name of the reactor. Once again we find ourselves in the sway of going back to go forward. And why not? If there isn’t enough menace to keep us busy in the present, plundering history will yield endless results. And no time has been wasted. Both title tracks, that’s ‘Roentgen Pt. 1’ & ‘Pt. 2’ are very well realised pieces of funky sci-fi imbued electro. The former being the more floor friendly, the latter a menacing creeper. The same can also be said of the two versions of ‘RBMK’. The remix by MMT-8, aka Ed Upton (DMX Krew) and label head Phil Bolland (Sync 24), is bass bumping, atmospheric dark destroyer. The original a malignant, pulsating slow motion piece of cold war cold wave peril. Top marks!

SNKRX07 - Mani Festo (Sneaker Social Club)

Title: SNKRX07

Artist: Mani Festo

Label: Sneaker Social Club

Cat Number: SNKRX07

Genre: Breaks Of Variety

1: Close Proximity

2: Shunt

3: Eraser

4: Hyperion

On this release for Sneaker Social Club, Mani Festo shows that he is more than acquainted with the nuances of break beats. ‘Close Proximity’ is a bottom heavy bounce through the thick frequencies of hyperkinetic bass, all the while accompanied by dissonant bleeps and a sense of unease. ‘Shunt’ operates on a looser, higher frequency, but exploits a similar strain of disembodiement, while ‘Eraser’ is similar, but more full bodied. ‘Hyperion’ is drum and bass sealed in a holistic bubble of science fiction chaos. It’s all fabulously uncompromising and essential. So there!

Class Tourist - Morgan Wright (Burning Rose)

Title: Class Tourist

Artist: Morgan Wright

Label: Burning Rose

Cat Number: BRR32

Genre: Pop Ambient

1: Spiritual Abandonment

2: Briefcase Wanker

3: Disthymia

4: I Think Of You

5: I’ll Be Coherent

6: Thinkers Disease

7: Bootlicker

8: Last Season’s Meta

9: Flex, Fire & Praise

I hope it isn’t too wide of the mark to say that ‘Class Tourist’ straddles the electronic pop divide with reasonable confidence. If one crudely divides the collection into tracks featuring a vocal of sortsl and instrumental, and aligns the former (‘Flex, Fire & Praise’, ‘I’ll Be Coherent’, ‘I Think Of You’) with the more accessible, it may feel like easy categorisation. However, In parts it rages: ‘Last Season’s Meta’ is capable drum and bass and ‘Bootlicker’ is a powerful exercise in industrial, anti-utopian break beats, underwritten with a bittersweet signature. The truth is that this album surprises along its uneven journey and is full of reflection and emotion. It’s also very well paced, with the first three tracks providing a lift off for the rest.

S/T - Trinity Carbon (ESP Institute)

Title: S/T

Artist: Trinity Carbon

Label: ESP Institute

Cat Number: ESP105

Genre: Post Apocalyptic Dub

1: Mild Bunch

2: Ghost Army Redemption

3: Fade ll Black

4: Star & Garterlude 1

5: Safe Distance

6: Underwater Ghosts

7: Archaeoacoustics

8: High St

9: Ashley Road Steppa

10: Star & Garterlude 2

11: The Drake Equation

12: Celestial Bird

13: Lullaby For The Apocalypse

Trinity Carbon is the lovechild of Patrick Conway, aka Jamie Russell, and Appleblim. This is their first long player together, having previously released two singles on Art-E-Fax. And, compared to those releases, this collection feels like a deliberate attempt to produce a narrative which, if one has heard correctly has been directly influenced by the passing of Andrew Weatherall, specifically regarding the need to avoid predictability. I also suppose that in doing so comparisons with AW’s output will be made, particularly that of Two Lone Swordsmen. It’s the dub obsession. Something that glues itself to the fabric of society and is able to morph and meander so effectively along it. The album itself crackles and fizzes with a suppressed electric energy, not really letting loose as much as it could, but that’s all part of the plan. It isn’t a linear listening experience, taking flight on occasion, (‘Safe Distance’, ‘ High St’, and ‘Ashley Road Steppa’, The Drake Equation’), and bottoming out with the two ‘ Star & Garterlude’ bookends. The rest of what transpires manages to convincingly walk the tightrope between deconstructed dub techno, (‘Mild Bunch’, ‘Ghost Army Redemption’, ‘Archaeoacoustics’), amorphous breakbeats (‘Underwater Ghosts’, ‘Celestial Bird’), lush, beautific beats  (‘Lullaby For The Apocalypse’) and the beatless void (‘Fade ll Black’). I’m sure I’ve done this album a great disservice in reducing it down to its constituent elements, but it coalesces remarkably well and is a real trip.

Post Modern - Thug Widow (Sneaker Social Club)

Title: Post Modern

Artist: Thug Widow

Label: Sneaker Social Club

Cat Number: SNKR028

Genre: Breaks

1: Post Modern Assault Ethics

2: Invisible Shell Of Energy

3: The Sacrifice

4: The Voices Beneath The Earth

Thug Widow has constructed a wonderful, self-sufficient rave ecosystem on this release. It’s rooted in hardcore, but is full of subtlety and expanse. ‘Invisible Shell Of Energy’ is an incredibly versatile track and could slot into a wide variety of sets due to its degree of funky, emotive engagement. ‘Post Modern Assault Ethics’ is a bass wobbling beast which retains a degree of introspection, as its name suggests. ‘The Sacrifice’ is perhaps the most abstract track here, occasionally soaring out of earshot only to reconstitute itself, while ‘The Voices Beneath The Earth’ has a liquid quality which enables it maximum genre - bending flexibility. Like ‘Invisible Shell Of Energy’, it’s more than the sum of its parts and conveys an indefinable, but positive mood.
