Track Of The Day: Cabaret Voltaire - Nag Nag Nag (Rough Trade)

For many people, Cabaret Voltaire’s most recognisable tune. Also the best selling single of their years with Chris Watson. Oddly conventional for them, but recognisably not. Having said that, you can hear drums, what sound like guitars, and a bass. The fuzz is what gets you though. Feedback like The Velvet Underground on steroids, and a catchy refrain. There’s vocals by Steven Mallinder , who wrote it, and a spoken word sample of Patrick Moore “talking about some solar activity on The Sky At Night.” Rough Trade got them down to do this at a 16 track studio in London, something that they hadn’t previously experienced, The results are unforgettable and typify more than most tracks, the next stage in the evolution of sound design post-punk. A springboard from the late 70s into the early 80s, ahead of its time, still sounding fresh, and an incredible video that Laurie Anderson must have been inspired by.
