The dub version of Massive Attack’s ‘Protection’, with Tracey Thorne on vocals, is memorable just for the opening few bars. It’s been around now for almost 30 years and it’s a classic, but more than ever in these days of cosmic disco dial downs and relentless chug, its moment has definitely come. The insistent acid throb low in the mix is years ahead of its time, and the vocal is used in such a dramatic and concise way that you don’t feel that anything else could possibly raise the tension. But every little element does just that. If there was ever a late night, or early morning track, this is it. One to listen to as the silence closes in and is embraced.
