This Is The End . . .? Machines Are Funky Playlist: 28.11.09

Here's an update on the situation at 209 Radio at the moment. It doesn't make pretty reading I'm afraid. At the moment it would seem that last night's broadcast was my last show. I'll wait until Tuesday until I say anything further. Here's last night's playlist in any case.

Saturday's Show

On this week's show there'll be a reasonable dubstep/techno interface, with Kevin Gorman remixed by Peter van Hoesen, as well as the upcoming Sigha release on Hotflush. As well as that, LoSoul remixed by Dyed Soundorom on Freak N' Chic and Kris Wadsworth's take on dancefloor-friendly dub techno. Tons more grooviness assured.

I hope that this show won't be the last time I broadcast on 209. Apparently there's a trustee's meeting on Saturday that may pull the plug on everything if financial help hasn't been forthcoming. My show has been prerecorded, as I'm away on family business this weekend, so what I've recorded may not be broadcast should Saturday be the last day of all. I'll be on my way up to Liverpool tomorrow afternoon with my fingers crossed and hope in my heart.

Hot Future Happenings

So Jamie Jones played The Priory at The Fez in Cambridge last Thursday and I duly made a nuisance of myself and asked him if he'd do an interview for this blog and possibly submit a mix for my show. He said yes to both (he hopefully remembers), so watch out for some words from the Welsh wizard in the not-too-distant-future. Lee Foss was also in attendance and I'll be sending him some questions too. With another interview from Geddes in the pipeline, it's going to be a busy next few weeks.

And Here's What You Would Have Heard . . .

No one stepped forward to be my duty manager for this evening's show. A very frustrating state of affairs that, although it hasn't often occured, has always been a very real danger. Anyway, I was ready to go and even though I didn't broadcast tonight I thought I'd list what I would have played in my hypothetical playlist.

Machines Are Funky: 14.11.09

Aidy's Girl Is A Computer (Kyle Hall remix) - Darkstar (Hyperdub)
A Goat On Fire In The Garden Of Eden - Jabberjaw (Spectral)
The Edge - Lee Foss (Culprit)
Move - Ahmet Sisman (Slash)
Slently (Kirk Degiorgio remix) - Clara Moto (Infine)
Rollerskate - Mathias Aguayo (Kompakt)
Meandyou dub - Lowtec (Smallville)
Close To Me (Robert Hood remix) Youandme (Ornaments)
Helix - Marcel Dettmann (Diamonds & Pearls)
How Can You Lose (Numbercult)
Nebula - Delano Smith (Mixmode)
A World Divided (Offworld mix) - Octave One (430 West)
Rawww - Sigha (Hotflush)
Pastilla - Anton Zap (Quintessentials)
The Paranormal (Wolf & Lamb remix) - Voodeux (Mothership)
Cyclic (Peter Van Hoesen remix) - Kevin Gorman (Mikrowave)
No Relief - Pete Grove (Thoughtless)
Perrako (Moodymanc Double Dub mix) - Microsoul (Lust)

So, the order of play would be different but the above is more or less what would have been played tonight. In addition there would have been shitloads of important, opinionated information. In spite of its detractors, I quite like the Magda Fabric 49 cd. Judging by some of the comments a lot of people were expecting something else, bit more receptive here, but this is par for the course on these forums. Martyn is doing Fabric 50, so that should be interesting.

I'll round up a few mixes this week and post a few links. Keep it locked.

Darkness And Light

Here's something I did this afternoon while I was in the mood. The next mix I do will be for a very special blog and will need a bit of time taken and a lot of thought devoted to it. Spontaneous as this one is, it's still well-balanced and, as far as I'm concerned, has a narrative.

December 10th - San Proper (Perlon)
Point Of No Return - Johnny D (Oslo)

Disorder - The Cheapers (Upon You)
Goldbrokat (Donato Dozzy Techno mix) - Cio D'Or (Prologue)

The Voice From Planet Love - Precious System (Running Back)
Teleparty - Robert Dietz (Cecille Numbers)

Bells (Mr G's "No Bells" remix) - Semtek (Don't Be Afraid)

Sun Step - Oxia (8-Bit)
Juerca (Joke 04)
Things Fall Apart - Lee Foss (Culprit)

Derrick May Once More

Last Saturday BBC 6 digital radio broadcast a two hour Derrick May special. Here's a blurb from the BBC website.

Pioneering DJ Derrick May returns to 6 Mix with three brand new exclusive DJ sets, showcasing tunes from his musical past, present and future

Derrick - best known for his 1987 dance anthem Strings of Life under the name Rhythm Is Rhythm - has been an iconic name on the techno scene for over twenty years, DJing worldwide to a devoted fan base. Hailing from Detroit, Michigan, May's work - alongside fellow DJs Juan Atkins and Inner City's Kevin Saunderson - has provided the catalyst for a number of producers worldwide.

In his second 6 Mix of the year, Derrick plays classic house tunes which have inspired him from Fingers Inc and Lil Louis, plus jazz from Herbie Hancock and upfront music from John Tejada. He also talks about his work as a DJ and where's he's heading musically There's also a brand new hi tek soul mix and in the second hour of the show Derrick gets on the decks for an exclusive 'May Day' club mixes, featuring Liasons Dangereuses and Patrick Cowley and hot tunes from his own Transmat label.

I think you get the picture.

Last Nights Playlist:

It's a lovely sunny Sunday in Suffolk. I've just had roast chicken with roast potatoes with mango, pineapple and kiwi fruit to polish it off. I'm sitting with a coffee surveying all that lies before me and wondering how much more complete my life could be at this moment. For some people nirvana could be reached by letting off a rather loud fart, for others throwing a rubber brick at the tv when the red-nosed Alex Ferguson comes into range. For me though, it's plotting world domination by blog. I am very lazy though. One thing at a time.

Here's last night's playlist while I'm in the mood.

God Of The Machine - Ricardo Jefferson (Third Ear)
Bounce To Me - Tolfrey & Ramirez (Phonica)
Swallowed Too Much Bass (KW's "Pop Dat Cat" remix) - Steve Bug feat Paris The Black Fu (Poker Flat)
Within You (Lerosa remix) - Mark O'Sullivan (Nice & Nasty)
Wipes - Markus Homm (Highgrade Digital)
I Lose My . . .- GummiHz feat Emena (Mobilee)
Bounce The Blues - John Shenanigans (Circus Company)
Grasshopper - Dub Dummies (Darek)
Words, Breaths & Pauses - Cheap & Deep Productions (Cheap & Deep)
No One Can Hear Your Echo In Space - Samulli Kemppi (Prologue)
Aesaunic - Scuba (Hotflush)
Black Sun - Greg Gow (Transmat)

Range - Robert Hood (M-Plant)
Fuse (Dixon remix) - The Machine (Innervisions)
Desert Storm - XDB (Metrolux)
Instant In You - Audion (Spectral Sound)
Intro Ducing - Mathias Kaden (Vakant)
Swedish Woman - Gestoten Cirkel (Murder Capital)

Next show comes up on Halloween with Frijsfo Beats' Dave Kelso, aka DJ Oslek at the controls.

Keep it locked.
