Track Of The Day: Bullitt | Soundtrack Suite (Warner Bros)

A great example of a piece of art which has been summarised. And although that’s not to say that someone else might not do it differently, what we have here is one interpretation of the musical meanderings that accompany one of the stand out films of the late 60s, one of many iconic works by the great Lalo Schifrin. To listen to this collection of pieces stitched together in this way is to be dropped into a world full of glamour, excitement and nostalgia; which is a pity because we’ll never see a time like it again. It reeks of cool and transcends cliché, because music like this so effortlessly soundtracked an autonomous layer of society that taught us all how to look good without even trying, because that was it back then. Brilliant arrangements and an implicit ambience of controlled excess mark this soundtrack out as a panoramic masterpiece.
