Theiz - I Said Acid EP (EPM Music)

Title: I Said Acid EP

Artist: Theiz

Label: EPM Music

Cat Number: EPM120

Genre: Techno

1: 4 Loulou: Starting The Best Part Of Life

2: I Said Acid

3: Struggling For Positivity

4: The Bouncing Pony

The first three tunes on this release are permeated by the 303, starting towards the second half of ‘4 Loulou: Starting The Best Part Of Life’ in order to artfully liaise with the title track. And, in the process, giving more intrigue to a broken beat curtain opener. ‘I Said Acid’ picks up momentum from the second the baton is passed. With an eponymously intoned line to allay any doubt, the build is subtle and voluminous simultaneously. ‘Struggling For Positivity’ scoops out the bottom end from the tribally-leaning percussion from what precedes it and heightens the sensitivity factor, recalling some of the more emotive characteristics of a lot of early nineties UK produced techno and ‘The Bouncing Pony’ combines synth stabs and pads, which gain in complexity as the track progresses, to drill itself into your dancing feet.

Brendon Moeller - Blue Moon (ESP Institute)

Title: Blue Moon

Artist: Brendon Moeller

Label: ESP Institute

Cat Number: ESP125

Genre: Meditations

A1: Deep Blue

A2: Feast

A3: Vibrations

B1: Depth Charge

B2: Ruins

B3: Signals

Dub is a fuzzy musical nether region. There are those who consider it a genre in itself. However, it’s another sonic take; something that renders something previously concrete through the somnolent looking glass. And it is Brendon Moeller’s speciality, of that there is no doubt. These 6 tracks for Lovefinger’s ESP Institute, however; although awash with the type of low key kinaesthetic triggers he is known for, have skeletons fashioned from break beats of varying intensity, which serve to blend with the pervasive atmospherics to coalesce in deep, ambient percussive workouts. Like any exercise in the art of dub, these compositions demand repeated listening in order to uncover elements missed on previous forays. Sometimes the beats are denser, sometimes they fall apart. And, although listening to the whole release end-to-end can feel like an exercise in repetition, that’s where the necessary patience to scrutinise the detail comes in handy.

Rupert Cross-Strapped Out EP (Ransom Note)

Title: Strapped Out EP

Artist:  Rupert Cross

Label: Ransom Note

Cat Number: R$N48

Genre: Electro Disco

1: Strapped Out feat. C.A.R.

2: Blue Line feat. C.A.R.

3: Pepper

4: Dreamland, Dreamland

5: Strapped Out feat. C.A.R. (Miles Vandersteen Remix)

6: Strapped Out (Instrumental)

7: Blue Line (Instrumental)

8: Strapped Out feat. C.A.R. (Miles Vandersteen Instrumental Remix)

A decidedly off beat title track sets things off. ‘Strapped Out’ seems to be at odds with itself in the sense that C.A.R.’s vocals seem to be the glue holding two shifting sonic tectonic plates. If you’re throwing shapes to this you’d better be double jointed. The Miles Vandersteen Remix is the superior track in that its easier to dance to. As well as this, there’s more depth and direction. ‘Blue Line’ comes on like a lost, uptempo cold wave classic, blending a bittersweet melody with a deadpan vocal. It’s good and needs a longer edit. ‘Pepper’ is coming together of disparate digital frequencies enjoying a crucial symbiotic relationship; while ‘Dreamland, Dreamland’ goes even further out on a limb, emphasising the dissonance, but keeping it on a tight leash. An interesting mixed bag of beats innit.

Track Of The Day: Superpitcher~Happiness [Michael Mayer Remix] (Kompakt)

Jorge Caiado at Waking Life WL24 (2024)

Random Playlist Gibberish (Edited Post From Sept. 2006) 😀

It's an interesting time for music at the moment. For the first time in a while, techno seems to be popular, or becoming so, in the UK. If we're really honest it's never really caught on outside a few enclaves like Voodoo in Liverpool, The Orbit in Yorkshire, Lost in London and Club 69 in Glasgow. OK, I know other places have always veered that way, Slam at The Arches and that place in Birmingham where Surgeon had a residency to name but two, but somehow music that has always layered the electronic music matrix has burst out all over like a ripe carbuncle and sprayed its minimal pus on the overground. I suppose every things time comes eventually, and I'm by no means sure that this current proliferation is an entirely good thing.

In any case, what I'm saying is hardly news, it's been smouldering now for the last few years. Funky house seems to have been killed off once and for all, along with funky techno, the type pushed by labels like In-Tec, to make way for an electrotechhousehybrid. I'm certainly not one to rampantly start pigeonholing everything which comes my way. As far as I'm concerned good and bad music are the only two genres worth discussing, but as far as the mainstream is concerned, these are relatively interesting times.

Check out the new Cassy mix cd "Panorama Bar 01" (Ostgut ton) for an interesting ride through some examples of the sounds that are currently heading down the right strasse.
