ILA026- Hrdvision (I Love Acid)
Title: ILA026
Artist: Hrdvision
Label: I Love Acid
Cat Number: ILA026
Genre: Techno
1: Startup
2: How The F It Trax
3: Revenge Body
4: Went Through My Heart
Hrdvision, a name I haven’t been keeping tabs on since the heady days of Wagon Repair, debuts on Posthuman’s I Love Acid with four solid, functional workouts that contain depth, distinction and dynamism. There’s an understatement at work in all of these tracks that I feel is essentially the key to a great acid tune: (with a few exceptions of course ‘Acperience’ being one that comes to mind). ‘How The F It Trax’ and ‘Revenge Body’ show this subtlety in their off beat approach, whereas both ‘Startup’ and perhaps the most conventional tune as far as 303 expectations are concerned, ‘ Went Through My Heart’ pick up the pace, with the former being an airy minimal acid romp by comparison to the latter’s denser approach. All good, with the two shorter, middle tracks going out on an interesting limb.

IRENICSPC008 - V/A (Irenic)
Title: IRENICSPC008
Artist: Various
Label: Irenic
Cat Number: IRENICSPC008
Genre: Dub Techno
01: Voyager 1 – Rinaldo Maka
02: Vibert – Fletcher
03: Magic River – Christine Benz
04: Taiga – Alessandro Crimi
The latest various artist release on Roger Gerressen’s always essential Irenic imprint brings together four tracks that, cover most dance floor-friendly dub techno bases, offering variety insofar as tempo and mood are concerned. Rinaldo Maka’s ‘Voyager 1’ is, as its name suggests, a cosmic pump into the outer limits. ‘Vibert’ goes beyond the dub to regale the listener with a piece of uplifting, low-slung, but hot weather deep house. The two eponymously geographical tracks that remain are perhaps the moodiest, with ‘Taiga’ all soaring synths and choral ambience, and ‘Magic River’ a solemn, slightly caustic, more tenacious piece. Essential shizzle.

Knock Motion EP - Rene Wise (Blueprint)
Title: Knock Motion EP
Artist: Rene Wise
Label: Blueprint
Cat Number: BP065
Genre: Techno
A1: Shaman Whistle
A2: Don’t Care
B1: Frown Like Brown
B2: Knock Motion
If you like your techno looped and with attention to the beats, then this EP from Rene Wise comes highly recommended. The four tracks here don’t break any new ground, but they do incorporate a healthy attention to detail which adds a nice edge. Both ‘Shaman Whistle’ and ‘Knock Motion’ are elevated by the inclusion of added decisive layer: in the former it sounds like a startled cat, the latter is presumably the titular shaman’s whistle. ‘Don’t Care’ is centred on a funky shuffling drum which underpins a deadpan vocal sample adding a sort of flat intensity, (if that makes any sense). And ‘Frown Like Brown’ is a tracky flanger, which has me in mind of some vintage DJ Sneak on Relief. All aboard!

Still - Basic Rhythm (Sneaker Social Club)
Title: Still
Artist: Basic Rhythm
Label: Sneaker Social Club
Cat Number: SNKR037
Genre: Hardcore
1: Still
2: Le Samourai
3: Still (The Golden Bough)
Anthony Hart, aka Basic Rhythm, knows a thing or two about sounddistillation. Less is definitely more as far as he’s concerned. And this approach is evident throughout this release; the beats on still are sparse and skeletal, running the length of the track after a serendipitous beginning. It’s a cleverly arranged composition because depending on the listener’s focus, the pace of the drums can be perceived in two different ways depending on whether you follow the top or bottom end. ‘Le Samourai’ follows a similar path of transgression, but this time the beats are weightier and the mood more abstract and disorientating. ‘Still (The Golden Bough)’ falls somewhere in between as far as intensity is concerned, and is another exemplary exercise in beat concision and the sideways shifting of reality.

Pattern Repeat EP - Fossil Archive (Fossil Archive)
Title: Pattern Repeat EP
Artist: Fossil Archive
Label: Fossil Archive
Cat Number: FAUK013
Genre: Techno
01: Pattern Repeat (feat. ZaaZaa)
02: Bridgetown
03: Follow The River
04: Chimera
Although I love the genre, I often find myself wondering what techno has got left. It’s no exaggeration to say that it has, to a certain degree, stopped evolving and that barring a few real innovators and imaginative proponents, both on the artist and DJ category, it has stagnated. This release by Fossil Archive doesn’t break any new ground, but at least it sounds like it means business and is a little bit more than loops. It’s even fun in parts. Bending towards a big room sensibility, ‘Follow The River’ creates the correct kind of ambience with its momentum and acidic squelches which are just right. ‘Pattern Repeat (feat. ZaaZaa)’ is a dramatic dive into the abyss alongside a grandiose choir of pain. (Having said that, side by side both of these tracks sound very similar). The hollowed out tribal loops of ‘Bridgetown’ are well observed while the introspective ‘Chimera’ stands alone as the best of the lot. More hits than misses for my money.
