This is ED DMX’s second release for Peggy Gou’s Gudu label, and on this occasion he seems to have gone full hi tech funk, classic Chicago call it what you like. The title track is Detroit inside and out, very much UR influenced and taking its cues from the jazzier end of the techno spectrum. The clues in the name with ‘Altered Chords’, which uses the instantly recognisable riff of Ron Trent’s classic as a foundation for a slightly arpeggiated interpretation. ‘U Ain’t Really Down’ is a tracky Relief-era stomp that recalls some of DJ Sneak’s, and even Neil Landstrumm’s funkier moments, while ‘I Love Juan’ is a sci-fi embellished homage to (I imagine) Mr Atkins. A well-observed piece of work that shows off Mr DMX’s considerable skills and experience.
