Track Of The Day: James Shiner - Wasp (We're Going Deep)

From the still hot from the oven ‘We’re Going Deep 12005’ EP, this is a track that, for James Shinra, is a little bit more raw than his normal output. Shinra is one of a growing number of producers whose signature sound is pushing electro forwards. The genre is in very rude health at the moment, and Shinra has, as well as anyone else, perfected the art of machine funk polyvalency. It’s possible to hear one of his tracks and be caught completely unawares regarding what exactly it is you’re listening to. A lot of his compositions operate on a layer of isolated melancholia cultivated from an ear adept at distilling microdots of various electronic music motifs. This particular track, as already observed, is a throwback to the halcyon days of British rave reappropriating Chicago house through the looking glass of extremely clear production values. Why is it called ‘Wasp? I know that there used to be a synth called a wasp. Maybe it was used on the tune?
