Track Of The Day: Mike Grant - The Struggle of my People (Mr G's There's Hope Mix) (Moods & Grooves)

As far as I can remember, Colin McBean, aka Mr G, wasn’t producing many remixes around the time this was released, which is 21 years ago now. Phew! He’d started producing under this name around three years previously after producing as one half of The Advent, and Cisco Ferreira joined him on his early releases, which were under the G Flame & Mr G name, until around 2000, when McBean went solo. The pair had also released on Moods & Grooves in the form of the ‘Give & Take’ EP just before their parting of the ways (I suppose). Anyway, waffle and context aside, this is a typical G groove. Relentless percussion buoyed up by bass and, in this case, dramatically swirling synths blown in from Detroit. The Maya Angelou spoken word sample of ‘I Rise’ is used sparingly and chopped up effectively in order to stand out intermittently from the track. I remember when this was released and thinking how it was unmistakeably a Mr G production, but also how it shifted the narrative just a little. Mr G is a producer who has enjoyed a lot of success in recent years as a live performer, but I feel he never gets the kudos he properly deserves as far as his recorded output is concerned. There’s no doubt that once you’re caught in the headwind of one of his tracks, it’s instantly recognisable as his, and there’s not too many producers who can make that claim.

Here's an interview I did with Colin McBean many moons ago.
