This is Carl Finlow’s second long player of 2023, with ‘Plasmoids’ having been released on Science Cult earlier in the year. ‘Mr Machine Pt. 2’, however, is under his Silicon Scally nom de plume, and follows up Pt. 1, which was released 20 years ago. Within that time a lot has happened, one thing that certainly hasn’t changed though is Finlow’s talent for crafting future funky beats. If he has a “signature sound” as far as his unambiguous take on electro is concerned, it is maybe exemplified by the concave and subtle sound design of a track like ‘Tachocline’, which is funk personified, mainly due to the range of intrigue elicited by the off kilter synth work flying across the beats. ‘Lonely Integers’ continues this approach. It’s nothing original, but it’s done here with unmatchable finesse and panache. ‘Diffraction Field’ uses the space between the beats in order to drive itself forward, and ‘Digicell’ fluctuates like some weird form of android acumen, gestating in a secret, sterile environment. Some great Fisher Price flourishes on show here as well. Perhaps my favourite is ‘System Of Voids’ with its bottom heavy throb and panoramic feel. The beats are tight, but the shifting sense of drama and uncertainty fill all available space between heaven and hell. It’s gratifying to listen to a collection of tracks aimed squarely at the dance floor, with each one succeeding in its objective of quantifying and delivering the maximum electro punch with each embellished pummel.
