I got into hip-hop quite early, particularly for someone from my neck of the woods. However, I could never claim to have been a b-boy. It was just the latest strain of music that had come out of black America, a location that I had arrived at 2nd hand through my post-punk proclivities and their obvious influences. I had been listening to, and buying jazz since the early 80s, and hip-hop was a next logical step on the ladder. Anyway, why this track? The combination of grandiose production and laid-back rapping was never replicated by these hit wonders, but stylistically predates the more successful EPMD. This is a fabulous record, and an omnipresent ear worm.
