Pepper EP - Basic Rhythm (Hypercolour)

Title: Pepper EP

Artist:  Basic Rhythm

Label: Hypercolour

Cat Number: HYPE090

Genre: Rhythm Centered Rollers

1: Pepper

2: 3am On The Corner

3: Moonlight Flit

My partner’s first observation on hearing this EP’s title track was to say that she thought it was a heavily laden wheelbarrow going down our back passage. We’re having some work done at the moment you see. I think she over-exaggerated; having said that, as far as fitting into to the “rhythm centred rollers” glove is concerned coming on like a hoodoo ho down, maybe not. It’s not all heavy though. ‘3am On The Corner’ is a rubberoid skank through the wee small hours with a sax. This is risky I think, but minimally applied and reasonable. ‘Moonlight Flit’’ is all about the snare, which is more or less all that is going on here. Then the undulating sub bass makes its presence felt adding to the stripped down, tribal feel of this visceral stomp.
