Ionize - Prequel Tapes & dBridge (Midnight Shift)

Title: Ionize

Artist: Prequel Tapes & dBridge

Label: Midnight Shift

Cat Number: MNSX024

Genre: Electronic Confluence

A1: Divisible Cause

A2: Stray Thrills

B1: Pleasure Systems

B2: Mindless

Another interesting release from Midnight Shift who continue to set the controls to the heart of electronic rhythm’s g spot; the four cuts here each offering a different slant on syncopation and implicitly occupying the middle of asythetic audio Venn Diagram. None of these tracks weigh in at more than just over five minutes, which is a pity as they’ve each got legs and off kilter originality. ‘Stray Thrills’ is the heaviest tune here, but it simultaneously manages to feel weightless. ‘Divisible Cause’ is a scatty beat which offers the illusion of disembodiment. ‘Pleasure Systems’ is brittle break beats which crackle and flame, and ‘Mindless’ is an urgent, neurotic, dub – infused parallax. What brings all of these tracks together though, is an array of subtly used effects that distort the trajectory of the individual components and artfully reassembles them before the listener can come to terms with the change.
